Congratulations to Zara McGrath of 1st Class on taking First Prize in the  Dan Keane Memorial Poetry Competition 2016.  Zara will read her poem entitled “FIRE” at the special Award Ceremony in Listowel Community Centre on Thursday 2nd June.

FIRE (By Zara McGrath)

Sparks of neon orange

Flames of yellow gold

Like an angry animal

Very fierce and bold

Spreading fast

Blazing bright

In the dark

It’s such a sight

Touching it

Equals pains

Skin is red

Bursting veins

Colours of a lion

Angry fierce and bold

Very very VERY hot

And 5,000000 years old

15 March 2016

Tuesday March 15th was Proclamation Day in all schools.  Scoil Naomh Erc had an assembly of all the children and staff in the school yard where the 1916 Proclamation was read. We also had our very own 2016 Proclamation read by the 6th class girls.  Mrs Crean raised the National Flag while the pupils sang our National Anthem.  It was a very important and enjoyable commemoration of  one of the greatest events in our history.  Some video highlights of our  commemoration  can be viewed on our “Videos” page.

Kerryman – Halloween Short Story Competition

Boys and girls throughout the school were busy over the past few weeks writing stories for the Kerryman Halloween Story Competition.  Pens and keypads alike were overheating with activity as the frightful stories made their way from imagination to paper.  Stephen King must feel just a little bit scared by the terrifying standard of some of the offerings from the young authors.  From several hundreds of entries, a pupil from 4th class in Scoil Naomh Erc. took top prize in the 8-10 yr. category.  The proud winner was Xavier Collins and all in the school were delighted with Xavier’s great win.  This was the second year in a row that we have had a winner in the competition with Will O’Sullivan taking 1st prize in 2014.  The Kerryman called to the school on Tues. 3rd November to present Xavier with his prizes, a DVD Player and framed copy of his story published in the Kerryman Newspaper.  The school also received a 9″ tablet. Our Night At The Dogs fundraiser has come and gone and what a night it was.  Tremendous success with a huge crowd, superb racing and plenty of fun and games for the children.  Great credit is due to the hard working committee who really pulled out all the stops to make sure everything went smoothly on the night. A big thank you also to our very generous race sponsors, advertisers, dog nominators, all who gave donations to our fund and everyone who bough a ticket for the event, thank you all most sincerely.  Thanks also to Declan Dowling and all at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium for their assistance and guidance in running the event.  To view some pictures from the night check out Gallery/Night At The Dogs 2015

Saturday next May 23rd will bring us to our long awaited Night at the Dogs at the Kingdom Greyhound Tack Tralee. A huge effort has gone into preparing for this fundraising event, with board members, staff and the parents association all working together.  A combination of race sponsoring, advertising, dog nominations, raffle & ticket sales have all helped raise considerable funds, which will enable the school to proceed with the construction of an astro turf pitch at the rear of the school.  It is hoped that all who can, will come along and enjoy what will surely be a night to remember for our school community and friends. As well as 12 races, 2 of which are Buster races with prizes of €500 and €300 there will be novelty races for the children, bouncy castle, face painting and much much more.

Grandparents Day 29th January 2013

Tuesday January 29th was “GRANDPARENT’S DAY” in Scoil Naomh ERc  Glenderry. A large number of pupil’s Nans And Grandads  turned up for the special prayer service and celebration of the important role grand parents play in the life of the children.  Fr Leane led the prayer service and Joan Barrett spoke about the importance  of grandparents in all the children’s lives. The parents association were on hand to provide tea, coffee and a range of scones and cakes.  The children had worked the past week writing poems, stories and favourite prayers for their Grandparents and these were all on display on the walls of the hall. The Grandparents really enjoyed browsing through these.  The day was a fantastic success and is sure to be repeated in future years. Some pictures from the day can be seen in the Gallery/Grandparents Day.

Visit From Radio Kerry’s Deirdre Walsh

On 15th of December we had a visit from Deirdre Walsh of Radio Kerry.  She spent some time in the classrooms interviewing the children about their thoughts of Christmas and what they were doing in the Christmas concert this year.  Deirdre then recorded some christmas songs performed by the entire school  in the hall, accompanied by  their music teacher Ann O’Mahony.  The recordings will be broadcast as part of Deirdre’s Christmas Eve show on Radio Kerry at 2.00pm.  Pictures in Gallery/Christmas 2010.

Music Session

On June 18th, we had a séisiún ceoil with talented local musicians in the school hall. Many thanks to John Thornton, Tim Duggan, Kerry Barrett, Risteard Ó Fuaráin, Martin Magee, Seán Abeyta and Seán O Dwyer for giving up their free time voluntarily.

They provided inspiration to us all and our school musicians blended in well with them. We hope this can become an annual event to showcase the great work our music teacher, Ann Mahony, does with the pupils.  Irish music is an important part of our tradition and it is hugely important that we all do what we can to ensure its survival.  For some more picture taken during the session please check out the gallery.

Trip to the beach with Vincent Hyland

On the 27th May, we had a very enjoyable and informative visit to Ballyheigue Beach under the guidance and instruction of the very learned and entertaining Vincent Hyland.  His love of the sea was apparent to us all. See “Our Beach” in the gallery.
